The university has its roots in 1824 when the Leeds Mechanics Institute was founded. The school later became the Leeds Institute of science, art and literature, and in 1926 was renamed Leeds College of Technology. In 1976, James Graham College and the City of Leeds College of Education in 1907 as part of the school of the city of Leeds joined Leeds Polytechnic. In 1987, the University became a founding member of the Northern Consortium.
The law more education came into force in 1992, became the Polytechnic University of Leeds Metropolitan University, with the right to provide their titles. In 1998, the University merged with Harrogate College, Harrogate establish the campus until 2008, when he left school and university merged with Hull College. In 2008, the university has appealed to the State Council to be called "University of Leeds Carnegie," but finally abandoned in 2009, a collaboration with the University of North Florida has been to launch a program exchange for students and teachers.
